Songwriting
Presenters: Mark Wells and Morgan Evans


Get tips from two of Newcastle's finest songwriters - from inspirations to structures, co-writing and song writing "do's" and "don'ts". Both Mark and Morgan have won the Road to Tamworth Song Writing Competition and have recorded in Nashville. Their song 'Big Skies' hit the Aria Top 50 in 2007 and received high rotation on commercial radio.

Don Sleishman, has spent a lifetime on the drums. He is a professional drummer with over 40 years playing experience, the founder of the Sleishman Drum Company, and pioneer of the twin pedal and total resonance system. Don teams up with son David to present a workshop talking tuning, endurance and practise and performance techniques. Bring your sticks and a pad, this is a must see workshop for any drummer!

Brett Garsed is well known for his work with local pop icon John Farnham and rock band Nelson. He is renowned for his legato approach to guitar and the use of hybrid picking technique with his right hand. Come along and take what you can from one of Australia's finest musical exports.

What Do A & R Reps, Agents, Managers Look For In A Demo?


This seminar provides an opportunity for local artists to submit demo recordings. Five will be randomly selected and the demos will be played and assessed according to each panellist's requirements. Find out what they're looking for.
(Demo's must be submitted by 12 noon, 1st November at the Newcastle City Hall. Demo's must be on CD.)
The object of this seminar is to give the audience an insight into what takes place when the demos reach the A&R Rep, Publisher, Manager, Agent etc.

Drums Masterclass
Presenters: Don and David Sleishman


Don Sleishman, has spent a lifetime on the drums. He is a professional drummer with over 40 years playing experience, the founder of the Sleishman Drum Company. Don and his son David will conduct a master class / drum clinic where they will discuss good drum sound, the Sleishman Suspension System, different shell types, drum tuning and the Sleishman Twin Pedal and Resonance System.
Plenty of question and answer time here !!!

Songwriting
Presenter: Simon Shapiro


In the past couple of years Simon Shapiro has risen to prominence as a force in Australian and international songwriting. Winning 'Songwriter of The Year' at the 2007 Australian Songwriters Association awards and the 'APRA Songwriters' award at Musicoz soon after, Simon has gone on to tour Australia and the United States to support his debut album, 'Between The Noise'.
Simon shared the Gold Prize at the 'Park City Music Film Festival' in February this year and a month later, at the New Jersey singer/songwriter festival, his record was named 'Album of the festival'.
Simon now has song placements on American film, TV and radio to his credit to go along with 'Best Live Performance' and 'Best Pop Song' at the 2008 ASA awards.
Simon will talk about both the art and industry of songwriting, including song-craft, technique and inspiration.
Addressing methods of effective lyric and melodic writing whilst never losing sight of the magic and meaning that a song can carry.

When Composers meet Producers
Presenters: Greg White (Head of Production and Composition - Australian Institute of Music) and Richard Vella (Professor of Music, Newcastle Conservatorium of Music)


Greg White is a composer, music producer and performer who's creative output has been performed, published, broadcast and exhibited throughout Australia, USA, UK, France, Germany, Poland, Hong Kong, China, New Caledonia, Venezuela and Brazil. He has designed and presented courses at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Australian Film Television and Radio School, and Macquarie University and has composed or produced music for 14 feature films, 5 TV series, 25 theatre productions, 12 installations in public spaces and over 100 CD releases.

Richard Vella's diverse output includes works for orchestra, large ensemble, choir, film, chamber music, burlesque cabaret, music theatre, site-specific performances, and popular music genres. Many of his works are now recognised as set repertoire such as his Tango, for clarinet, and the guitar solos Between Earth and Air and Mirrors of Fire.
His film credits include Light Years, Parklands (starring Cate Blanchette and Tony Martin) Renzo Piano: piece by piece (for which he won the 1999 Australian Screen Composer's Award for best music for a documentary) and Mr. Strehlow's Films. His most recent feature film music score is Travelling Light (starring Pia Miranda and Sacher Horler, 2003) for which he received the nomination 'Best Music for a Feature Film' by the Australian Film Institute.
